John Joseph, called Jack, was the eldest child of Michael and Kate, born in Lawrenceville in January 1886. He left school at fourteen for the mill, like his father. In 1917 he registered for the draft as a married steelworker with a child, and was not called (S24).
In 1912 he married Nora Flynn, a dressmaker from the Hill District. They had three children; the eldest, James, was killed in Normandy in 1944, a loss Jack never spoke about. He died in November 1952.
