Ján Novák was a smallholder and carter in Kapušany, a village on the road north of Prešov in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary. He appears as the father in the baptism of his son Jozef in 1866 (S6). Nothing is known of his own parents yet.
He did not emigrate. The family believes he died before his son's naturalization in 1904, because Josef named no living father in the papers (S26).
