Mária Kováčová also came from Kapušany; she and Josef knew each other as children, and she followed him to Chicago in 1893. They married in October 1894 (S7). Her name appears in American records as Mary Novak.
In Windber she ran a boarding house for single miners and raised three children of her own and one she chose. When the widowed Sabo family next door lost their mother as well in 1909, she took in four-year-old Rose and later adopted her formally (S13). Mary died in Pittsburgh in 1944.
