Michael James Harper, named for his great-grandfather and for his uncle Jimmy, was born in June 1951. He studied engineering, worked for thirty years on the city's bridges, and in 1982 married Susan Brennan.
It was Michael who first asked his mother to write down what she remembered, and who began collecting the family's photographs into albums; this archive grew out of his boxes. He died in March 2019.
