Novák means ‘the new man’ — a newcomer to the village — and is one of the most common surnames in Slovakia and the Czech lands. In Hungarian records it appears as Novák, in Latin registers as Novák or Nowak, and in America simply as Novak.

The women of the family appear in Slovak records with the feminine ending -ová: Anna Nováková, born Hudáková; Mária Nováková, born Kováčová.
